    TRANSFORMATIONAL SOLUTIONS IN URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE

    Arthaland zero carbon certified buildings

The building sector is responsible for 39% of the world’s carbon emissions. Arthaland addresses the call for climate action through the construction and operation of green energy- efficient buildings. Arthaland is the only developer in the Philippines with a 100% certified green portfolio, including the first zero-carbon certified building in the country. Its buildings are designed to reduce operational carbon emissions of occupants. They have conserved enough energy to power 70,000 households, and have provided 20,000 green jobs.

Belgrade Energy-from-Waste and landfill remediation PPP project

The Belgrade energy-from-waste and landfill remediation PPP project aims to improve the Serbian capital’s poor waste management practices by replacing the largest dumpsite in Europe with a 103 MW waste-fired CHP plant, a recycling facility for demolition waste, and a new EU-compliant landfill for residues. The project eliminates existing issues, including landslides and pollution from landfill gases and leachate leakages, and presents a more sustainable waste management solution. 365GWh of renewable heat and electricity is expected to be generated annually. The project will be fully operational in June 2022.

    Global Climate Partnership Fund

The Global Climate Partnership Fund is dedicated to combating climate change in emerging and developing markets. This is achieved through an indirect financing approach, where the fund provides credit lines and technical support to local financial institutions in order to encourage investment in sustainable climate projects. The fund also directly finances SMEs for renewable energy initiatives. Over $800 million has been invested in 75,000 projects, which has led to an expected lifetime CO2 emission saving equivalent to that of planting 300 million trees.

    Jibu franchised drinking water treatment

Jibu addresses the lack of safe drinking water and business ownership opportunities in emerging markets in Africa. The company trains and finances entrepreneurs to produce and distribute affordable and safe drinking water and other essential services to their local communities. An environmentally-conscious approach is incorporated through the elimination of single-use plastics and the use of ultrafiltration water technology that requires less energy and water than traditional technologies. The franchise network currently employs over 1,500 full-time staff and has sold more than 160 million litres of safe drinking water.

SOSO CARE waste recycling and health insurance programme

Some 34 million tons of waste are created annually in Nigeria, with disposal leading to poor hygiene and pollution in communities. At the same time, less than 3% of the Nigerian population is insured. SOSO CARE connects the two issues with the first and only health insurance programme that accepts both cash and recyclable garbage as premium payments for low-income individuals, in particular slum dwellers. Recyclable materials are delivered to partner agents that sell the collected waste to large recycling companies, which in turn helps finance low-cost access to 1,170 hospitals around the country.
